Modelling Photosynthesis in Plant Canopies

University of Nottingham -Division of Plant and Crop Sciences

School of Biosciences - Research Associate/Fellow in Modelling Photosynthesis in Plant Canopies (Fixed-term)
£24,766 - £36,298 per annum depending on skills and experience (minimum £27,854 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.
Applications are invited for the above post based in the School of Biosciences. The successful candidate will join laboratories within the Plant and Crop Sciences Division carrying out fundamental and applied research into leaf and canopy photosynthesis. The Plant and Crop Sciences Division and the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology are internationally acclaimed as centres of excellence for fundamental and applied research underpinning our understanding of agriculture, food production and quality, and the natural environment.
This post is associated with the BBSRC-funded project “Removing the inefficiencies of 3-dimensional canopy photosynthesis by the alteration of leaf light-response dynamics and plant architecture”.  Photosynthesis in crops is a crucial target in the goal to enhance global food security. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of mathematical, computational and statistical models to understand photosynthesis in fluctuating light conditions, towards the ultimate goal of developing more efficient crops. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team consisting of computer scientists, biologists and mathematicians and will work on developing and integrating theoretical and computational models  with relevant biological data.  There will be opportunities to travel to collaborating laboratories overseas.
Candidates must have, or be close to completing, a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of applied mathematics or statistical modelling or in research at the interface of applied mathematics, statistics and a biological science and should have interest in, and enthusiasm for, the application of modelling to plant and crop science.
This full-time post is available from 1 April 2013 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2015.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Erik Murchie, tel 0115 9516082 erik.murchie@nottingham.ac.uk or Dr Simon Preston, Simon.Preston@nottingham.ac.uk or Professor Oliver Jensen, Oliver.Jensen@Manchester.ac.uk.
